History: Neil was born in Pittsburgh, Pa and grew up in McKeesport, Pa. He went to Penn State’s Main Campus in State College, Pa for his degree in structural engineering.
During his summer vacations in both high school and college, Neil worked at a local Pittsburgh amusement park. One day he met a girl named Ava Dobson when her college was having a special admission day. After they graduated college, the two married and settled in Bridgeville, Pa. Neil got a job with a company that managed cell phone towers about ten minutes from their house and Ava worked for a hospital about 20 minutes away.
Two days before the outbreak got out of control, Ava got a call that her grandfather had died in Iowa City. Since her mother and father were currently in Germany visiting her military stationed brother and his family, Ava was left to make the arrangements and drive to Iowa. Neil stayed behind, as his company had recently had a cell phone tower collapse and they were in the middle of intense repairs.
Neil was at his desk, talking to a sales representative in Nashville, TN when his phone went dead and the fire alarm went off. Most of the employees fled down the back stairway as they thought the building was on fire. Neil and his friend Rob ran up to the fourth floor where the corporate offices were via an employee id access only staircase. In the conference room, the found the company’s CEO, Vice President and a secretary watching the zombie massacre from a window that overlooked the building’s front.
The five were prepared to lock themselves on the floor when a man, followed by a pack of zombies, staggered out of the elevator. Neil, Rob, the secretary and the CEO ran for the staircase, but the Vice President stayed behind and was killed.
The group made their way to the roof, where they were rescued by a military helicopter and taken to a rescue station in nearby Crafton. All the while, Neil attempted to reach Ava on her cell phone, but the phone only rang and then went to voicemail.
A military dispute led to the station being overrun by zombies. Neil and his group made their way to the city, where they joined with another group of survivors and took refuge on the 47th floor of the US Steel building. Neil tried to reach Ava until his phone eventually went dead.
The survivors lived in the upper floors of the building, taking turns using the subway tunnels under the river to retrieve supplies from the South Side, Station Square, and a few nearby South Hills towns.
Six months after, Neil’s brother Xander made his way back to town. He had transported with the military from California where he had been vacationing. In a Nebraska refugee camp, he had encountered Ava’s cousin Sarah. Sarah had been with Ava at the time of the outbreak and told Xander to tell Neil what had “happened” to his wife.
Sarah said that the two had tried to escape Iowa City together in an attempt to get back to Sarah’s children in Nebraska. In the process, Ava was bitten, turned to a zombie, was shot by a National Guardsman and her body burned.
Neil was upset to learn of Ava’s death, but he was more disappointed to learn she had died in the initial outbreak rather than being able to fight for survival. His grief and disappointment led him to take up with a woman named Roxana Hart. While the two were together for sometime, Neil hasn’t seen Roxana since she went on a supplies mission to Mt. Washington.
Location At Time Of Outbreak: Second floor of a Canonsburg, PA office building
Sample Post: Neil wrapped his arm around Rosemary’s shoulders and tried to help her up the stairs. The poor woman had been terrified since they’d escaped the building. Not that Neil blamed her. She had every reason to be. Seeing what had happened in the office was beyond horrific.
“We’re going to be safe, we just have to get to the top of the building. I promise.”
